Seniors
Is it too Late to Learn? Never!
Whether you're a senior who has played this great game your whole life or one who is looking for a new form of recreation and exercise, it is never too late to learn the fundamentals and keys to a sound golf game. Below are a few articles to help get you into the swing of things.
Golf is a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, socialize, and stay active. But it is not without its physical challenges...especially as we get older. To help, TPI certified trainer and golf coach Bryce Amoy is here to answer a few questions you may have about picking up the game in the "twilight years." |
Most of the athletes that first come to see me already play golf. What makes me love my job the most is taking my athletes to the next level. There’s a heavy commitment to physically getting better and through years of work, all of my athletes achieve positive results. The ones that I love the most are the ones where my athlete was the shortest hitter in the group and now keeps up with the younger ones...usually decades younger than them.
I am recently retired and thinking about taking up golf.
What health benefits does golf provide for seniors?
Bryce: Aside from the social benefits, golf offers a lot of physical
activity.
Typically
a round of golf is about 4 hours, and depending on the course you can walk for
miles.
I’ve got a nagging injury that is preventing me from
playing as much/as well as I’d like. What should I do?
Bryce: It’s
always good to check with your doctor to see what the matter is.
With
that being said, most injuries that I see are usually overuse injuries or
injuries from
bad
biomechanics. Many adults pick up the game late in life and due to life
(lots of sitting,
being
hunched over a computer, watching tv on couch for hours, etc.) the body isn’t in
peak
form to be doing very fast rotational swings and because of compensations in
the
body,
injury can occur. At DNA, I screen everyone one of my athletes. This physical
assessment
is key to unlocking roadblocks in the pursuit of performance.
I’ve played golf my whole life without taking a lesson,
is it too late for my
mind/body/muscles to learn a new swing?
Bryce: With golf as well as most sports, it’s never too late to
learn something new. However, with that being said, having a TPI certified
trainer and a good golf coach, all individuals will benefit regardless of where
their golf game stands.
